Authentic Portuguese Sweet Bread Recipe: Easy Stand Mixer Method

Are you craving the warm, sweet aroma of freshly baked bread filling your kitchen? Look no further than this delicious Portuguese Sweet Bread recipe! What sets this recipe apart is its unique method that allows you to effortlessly knead the dough using a stand mixer with a dough hook attachment, saving you time and effort. Let’s dive into the details of this mouthwatering treat that will surely become a staple in your baking repertoire.

  • 2 packages of yeast
  • 1/4 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 cup of milk
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 4 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 5 cups of flour (additional flour may be needed)

  1. Activate the Yeast:
    • In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in lukewarm water. Allow it to sit for a few minutes until foamy, indicating that the yeast is active.
  2. Prepare the Milk Mixture:
    • In a saucepan, scald the milk over medium heat. Add the butter, sugar, and salt to the scalded milk, stirring until the butter is melted. Allow the mixture to cool until lukewarm.
  3. Combine Ingredients in Stand Mixer:
    • Transfer the lukewarm milk mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment. Add two cups of flour and mix until well combined.
  4. Incorporate Yeast and Eggs:
    • Pour in the dissolved yeast mixture and beaten eggs into the stand mixer bowl. Beat the mixture until smooth and well incorporated.
  5. Knead the Dough:
    • Gradually add enough flour to form a soft dough. Adjust the flour as needed; the dough should be soft but not sticky. Allow the stand mixer with the dough hook to knead the dough until it appears satiny and elastic.
  6. First Rise:
    • Place the kneaded dough into a butter-greased bowl, cover it with a clean towel, and let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size.
  7. Shape and Second Rise:
    • Once the dough has risen, shape it into rolls or mold it into a braid, depending on your preference. Allow the shaped dough to rise again until puffy and doubled in size.
  8. Bake to Perfection:
    • Preheat your oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Bake the risen dough for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and cooked through.
  9. Final Touch:
    • As soon as the bread is out of the oven, brush the top with melted butter for a deliciously glossy finish.
